Nothing has officially revealed Nothing OS 4.0, its next big update based on Android 16, bringing a suite of visual refinements, privacy enhancements, and usability updates.
What’s New in Nothing OS 4.0
1. Refined User Interface
- Lock screen clocks have been reimagined to be more elegant and consistent.
- Quick Settings has a cleaner and more standardized tile layout.
- Overall design looks more fluid less clutter more clarity in visual hierarchy.
2. Extra Dark Mode
- An enhancement over the current dark theme this mode pushes toward true black tones aimed at reducing eye strain and saving battery especially on OLED displays.
3. Multitasking and app optimizations
- Introduction of a Pop-up View feature: run two floating app windows, switch between them, minimise or expand with simple gestures.
- General app optimization: faster start times, smoother performance across basic interactions.
4. Upgraded camera and gallery
A revamped TrueLens Engine underpins the camera and gallery improvements new creative presets more intuitive control layouts smarter gallery features.
5. AI Transparency and Control
- A key focus is making AI more visible: there will be status hints for when AI / large language models are in use.
- New AI usage dashboard and usage trends to show which AI features or models are active.
6. Other System Improvements
- Lock screen and always-on display responsiveness improved.
- Refined brightness controls enhanced bluetooth and Wi-Fi stability.
- Smoother transitions and more stable behaviour overall.
Nothing OS 4.0 rollout and availability
- The update is based on Android 16.
- Nothing will begin an open beta program soon letting users test out OS 4.0 before full public release.
- Phones eligible include most Nothing devices, though older or end oflife models may be excluded.
