What are the important ITR Filing 2025 deadlines this year?
The government granted an extension in May, pushing the ITR deadline from July 31 to 15, Sep 2025, specifically for taxpayers not required to undergo audit. But this is not a one size fits all scenario.
Non-audit taxpayers (like salaried individuals) must file by 15 Sep, 2025 and businesses and professionals subject to audit have time until 31 Oct 2025.And for those under transfer pricing obligations, the deadline is 30 Nov2025.
Why are people requesting another Extension ?
As the CA and tax practitioners point to multiple issues in itr filling like technical glitches on the e-filing portal continue to hamper filing.
Mismatch in data between AIS and Form 26AS creates confusion over which information to trust.
A new audit report format is adding pressure, especially for companies and professionals. These challenges are fueling demands for more time from CAs and taxpayer groups.
Filing Stats at a Glance
Despite the extension, the pace of filing and processing remains sluggish.
By 30 Aug, over 4.18 crore returns had been filed, with 3.96 crore verified and just 2.6 crore processed.
Recent data as of 4 Sep show 4.56 crore filings, 4.33 crore e-verified, but only 3.17 crore processed.
What happens If You File Late ?
Under Section 234F, the penalty for those earning up to Rs. 5 lakh is Rs. 1 thousand and for higher earners, it is Rs. 5 thousand even if no tax is due. Interest of 1% per month may apply if there is unpaid tax.
Filing late may mean losing the ability to carry forward losses, which could shrink future tax saving opportunities.
If audit liable taxpayers overshoot their 31 Oct deadline, they can file a belated return by 31 Dec 2025, but the same penalties apply plus a possible Rs. 5 thousand fine.
Will an Extension Be Granted This Time ?
Another deadline shift hinges on developments in the coming week. If filings pick up significantly and portal performance stabilizes, another extension may not be needed.
But with only half of returns processed by late August, there’s reason to suspect more time might be granted should issues persist.
